                    BBC Radio Bristol launches on DAB digital radio.

BBC Radio Bristol has this week (22nd November) launched on digital radio in the Bristol and Bath areas. For the first time, listeners with a digital radio can tune in to the station on the NowDigital multiplex. SBN is also running test transmissions on the channel originally reserved for the @t Bristol education service. It remains to be seen whether the @t Bristol service will make it to air when digital radio uptake improves.

Century FM radio websites up and running.

Daniel Cardwell wrote to say that all 3 Century Online websites are up and running. We've also added 105.4 Century FM to our listen live : adult contemporary audio links page. Thanks to Daniel and Vinnie Lo, who both e-mailed us with this info.

More live football commentary links.

With the help of Kevin Rutherford, a big soccer fan, we've been able to add several more football live audio links to our pages.

More than fireworks as Star 107.1 & 107.5 blasts into Ely on November 5th.

The station serving Ely in Cambridgeshire, X-Cel FM, will make its final broadcast this weekend as it re-launches as Star 107.1 & 107.5. Having been acquired by UKRD Group in August this year, the station will be rebranded to match existing stations in Cambridge, Bristol and the Thames Valley.

BIGger brand becomes smaller in Yorkshire.

West Yorkshire's mediumwave radio station BIG AM will revert to its former identity as it re-launches over the weekend. West Yorkshire's Classic Gold will make a return to the area following a two-year absence. The future of BIG on digital radio in the area now looks uncertain; it was due to form part of the local digital multiplex in South Yorkshire, launching in Autumn 2002.

Lakeland Radio takes to the airwaves across South Cumbria, Southern Counties launches audio newsfeed.

The new local FM radio station for Windermere and Kendal, Lakeland Radio started broadcasting on 27th October. It can be heard on 100.8 FM in Windermere and 100.1 FM in Kendal. Lakeland plays music covering the last 40 years alongside a local news service. More information can be fond at The Lakeland Radio website.

BBC Southern Counties is the latest local station to be heard on the internet. Two separate news feeds are available for Surrey and Sussex. You can listen to the latest bulletins on our listen live : news and talk page.

BBC Radio Stoke and Radio Sheffield have launched a news audio feed, enabling listeners to hear the lastest news bulletin online. BBC Radio Sheffield goes one step further by offering a separate sports roundup feed. Both can now be found on our listen live : news and talk page.

BBC LDN London 94.9 logo BBC London Live bites the dust

October 1st saw the rebranding and relaunch of the public service radio station for London. BBC London 94.9 (or BBC LDN as its marque) is part of an initiative which has brought a new TV news programme for London, now separated from Newsroom South-East and an online service specifically for the city at the BBC London website. Presenter changes at the station means the welcome return of Danny Baker to BBC radio. Baker previously worked at BBC 1FM and Radio 5 at its launch. The radio station for London was formerly known as BBC London Live.

Saga 105.7 FM logo Digital Radio update

The digital regional multiplex for the North-West has launched. The multiplex officially launched on 25th September. Please see our regional listings to check station availability. DNN, the Digital News Network rolling news station, has launched in the North-West and North-East of England, in the West MIdlands and in South Wales and The West of England.

3C - Continuous Cool Country has replaced Ritz Radio on the Liverpool and Central Lancashire multiplexes. The station, from operator Score Digital, took to the airwaves on 1st October in these areas. The station is now also available on the Northern Ireland multiplex, launching on the same day.

Liquid will launch on digital radio on 25th January 2002 in London. Abracadabra is also advertising a January launch.

Finally, Saga 105.7fm will launch across the West Midlands region on 16th October, on both digital radio and 105.7 FM.

Phoenix FM and Funky Tiger logos Phoenix FM now on the net

Brentford and Billericay's internet station Phoenix FM is broadcasting 24 hours a day from Essex. Programming is stacked to the rafters, with everything from the music of Motown to Irish country music. There's also a local history programme and a show about the local arts scene. In fact, such a diverse range of programming must surely put many local stations to shame! You can tune in over the net now on our listen live pages, under 'England : local stations'.

Funky Tiger brings dance, funk and disco to the web

Internet station Funky Tiger broadcasts current and retro dance tunes from London via WinAmp. Tune in under 'commercial dance' on our audio pages.

PureChill, Pulse and Space FM Capital Digital launch fifth online station

Capital Digital Development, a division of Capital Radio plc, has launched another station streaming exclusively over the internet. PureChill, as its name suggests, plays nonstop chilled tunes from, most recognisably, Air. There are of course plenty of other artists on the playlist and you can listen live now on our audio pages. The station follows in the footsteps of Glisn, ATK13, Chyra and Dancemasters, which are all now available via this site and through the UK MSN portal.

The Pulse brings back its audio stream

West Yorkshire's local pop station The Pulse has reinstated its audio stream, following a facelift earlier in the year for the station's website which saw the temporary removal of the stream. You can tune in over the net now on our listen live pages.

Capital FM leads new website initiative to be rolled out across the Capital network

London's 95.8 Capital FM is now sporting a new makeover, thanks to Capital Interactive. The new site tweaks with the familiar departments of entertainment, news and sport and celebrity interviews. Other stations in Capital Radio's portfolio, such as Fox FM in Oxford and Ocean FM in Portsmouth have also adopted the new website style. It is widely thought that other stations owned by Capital will revamp their sites with the new look.

BBC Derby Online, Liverpool Online & Berkshire Online have all launched

The BBC is pressing ahead with development of more English region websites. The latest ones to be added are for Liverpool, Berkshire and Derby. Recently-launched NME Radio has been added to our listen live : rock page. The web-only station plays a selection of new rock, alternative and dance music, with a pick of 'choice cuts'. Hard rock & metal internet-only station Kerrang has also been added.

New dance music radio station for London

A new gay dance music radio station for London has launched on the internet. Purple Radio provides "the 24/7 soundtrack for the young and gay in the UK... playing the most up front club and dance floor fillers and coming live from the top gay venues every night." The station is also part of DRg's successful bid for London's third DAB digital radio licence; it has won the right to broadcast on DAB digital radio in London. Central Scotland regional digital radio

Digital radio for the Central Scotland region launches on 5th July, bringing new stations such as The Lounge, Big Scotland, Jazz and The Rhythm to the area, and for the first time Beat 106 and Scot FM to the digital platform. Please see our regional station listings for Scotland to check availability. The multiplex was originally due to go on air in May.

Teeside digital radio

Digital radio for the Teeside region launched at the end of June 2001. The station line-up consists of Classic Gold Digital, Real Radio, 3C, Kiss, Magic, Xfm and 96.6 TFM. Please see our Teeside listings for a full list.

Star 107.3

107.3 The Eagle in Bristol has been culled to make way for the All New Star 107.3, playing "better music and more of it", without "wind-up phonecalls and kiddie countdowns". The repositioning of the new station means more classic (but popular) hits from the seventies and, in particular, the eighties and nineties, from artists like The Lighthouse Family, George Michael and Blondie. In addition, the station aims to "get rid of the rap and the constant yapping" heard on other stations. 107.9 The Eagle in Cambridge has also met a similar fate, relaunching as Star 107.9. Both station have upped their hits-per-hour count and will be playing 107 minutes of continuous music during weekday mornings. The station have tweaked their websites, which can be reached below:

KCR 106.7

Mark Jones, our North of England correspondent writes:

After a six minute countdown, KCR 106.7 started broadcasting to Knowsley and the surrounding towns with an announcement by Program Director and Station Founder Ray Ferguson:

"It's six minutes past one on Saturday, 16th June 2001. And for the first time this is KCR 106.7".

It was followed by a mix of the station's jingles and the first record: Reach by S Club 7. In the opening show, the presenter Mike Taylor introduced the listeners to the station's other presenters, followed by a interview with special guest Ken Dodd, who managed to do a fifteen minute comedy routine about the launch.

96.2 The Revolution website launch

The new website for Manchester's local radio station has been launched. The website contains all of the usual stuff - presenter photos, competitions and the current schedule, wrapped up in a rather funky interface. Plus there's some flash game wizardry to keep you amused for a few minutes. For more flash, visit the other front page for the Revolution, before it's gone! Go see both!

Radio Magnetic

A new radio station has recently started up in Glasgow, which has been developed to 'fill the gap left by the lack of interesting radio in Scotland'. The line up includes music from the underground Scottish music scene, coming from both well-known and smaller, indie record labels. Radio Magnetic also brings in a variety of local djs for its varied line up. It also has a well-designed website.

MTV radio, Virgin's Wheels of Steel and Passion Radio

Compass FM

The new local station for North-East Lincolnshire, Compass FM, launched at 10:00am on Sunday, 3rd June on 96.4FM. The station plays music from the last 50 years, together with local news and information. More information can be found via the Lincs FM website front page.

New local digital radio stations launch in Leeds, Yorkshire

The new local digital radio stations serving Leeds in West Yorkshire have now launched (31st May 2001). For a full list of stations, please see our Leeds station listings.

Castle Rock FM

The new local radio station serving Dumbarton in West Dunbartonshire, Scotland - Castle Rock FM - began broadcasting on Wednesday, 30th May at 1.03pm on 103.0 FM. The station plays music from the last four decades alongside news, talk and community information. You can reach the station's website by clicking here.

Local digital radio in Edinburgh, Cardiff and South Yorkshire

The local digital multiplexes for the above areas launched on 30th October 2000, bringing stations such as MTV Dance to South Wales, Kiss to South Yorkshire and Xfm to Edinburgh. Please see our listings to see a full list of stations.

BBC Asian Network

The BBC is planning a rollout of its BBC Asian Network programming to utilise several medium wave (AM) frequencies that are currently being used by its BBC local radio stations. From Monday 27th November, the medium wave channels of BBC Radio Cambridgeshire will carry the Asian Network 24 hours a day. BBC Radio Leeds, Sheffield, Lancashire and Derby will provide the Asian Network for its listeners during evenings and at weekends on the medium waveband. It is expected that the Asian Network will permanently replace these existing BBC local medium wave services next year. The BBC has, in the past, been criticised for not providing split services on its AM and FM frequencies.

FM107.6 Fire

Solent-based dance music station 107.6 The NRG has changed its name to FM107.6 Fire. The changover took place in early November 2000 as a result of a request by French station NRJ.

101.7 Mercury FM

Harlow-based Ten17 FM has recently relaunched as 101.7 Mercury FM. The changeover took place during October 2000.

Real Radio

The new regional FM radio station for South Wales, Real Radio FM launched at 8am on 3rd October 2000 on 105.4 FM in Cardiff, 106.0 FM in Swansea and 105.9 FM in Newport. The station started test transmissions on Monday, 4th September. The station has a web site, which can be visited by clicking here.

Glasgow digital radio

The new local digital multiplex has been up and running in Glasgow for a while, bringing three new stations to the area. These are 3C (a country music station), Sunrise Radio (Asian) and Xfm (indie and new rock). For more information, please see our listings page for Scotland.

107.9 The Eagle

Cambridge station Red Radio 107.9FM has relaunched as 107.9 The Eagle. This brings the number of Eagle station to three, with others in Bristol and Guildford.

Kick FM

The new local analogue station for Newbury and West Berkshire, Kick FM officially launched on 29th May 2000. The station can be heard on 107.4 and 105.6 FM. The station serves the towns of Newbury, Hungerford and Thatcham as well as the surrounding areas. More information about the station can be found at the station's official website.

Local digital stations launched

Manchester, London and Birmingham now have their own local services on digital radio. These include existing analogue services as well as several new stations.

Primetime Radio

The new national digital easy listening station, Primetime Radio, is on the air now. The station launched on Monday, 15th May 2000. The station is aimed at the over-50s age group. Bridge FM

Bridgend's new local analogue radio station, 106.3 Bridge FM, is on the air now. The station launched on 106.3 FM on Monday, 1st May 2000. The station serves the county of Bridgend in South Wales.

The Wave 102

Following the purchase of Independant Radio Group (IRG) by The Wireless Group (formerly TalkCo, which also owns national station TalkSport) toward the end of last year, Dundee's Discovery 102 has relaunched as The Wave 102. The changeover happened at the end of March. Similar Wave stations operate in Swansea and Blackpool.

1458 Big AM

Following the purchase of Independant Radio Group (IRG) by The Wireless Group (formerly TalkCo) Manchester's 1458 Lite AM will relaunch as 1458 Big AM on 2nd May 2000. The Big AM also operates in Cheshire, Staffordshire and west Yorkshire.

96.6 Mercury FM

DMG Radio has relaunched St. Albans-based local station 96.6 Oasis FM as 96.6 Mercury FM. There are other Mercury stations in Surrey, West Sussex and Kent.

106.9 HertBeat FM (update)

The new local analogue radio station for Ware, Welwyn, Hatfield and Stevenage, HertBeat FM, is due to launch on 106.9 FM later in the year, with a relay for Stevenage on 106.7 FM. The station has launched a website, which can be reached by clicking here.

107.6 Juice

According to reports, Liverpool-based alternative and indie station Crash FM has relaunched as 107.6 Juice, as of 26th March 2000.

BBC London Live

BBC GLR has relaunched as BBC London Live as of 27th March. The relaunch forms part of a 1.5 million UKP upgrade the BBC is making to its television and radio services in the South-East.


National digital radio station, Oneword, is no the air now. The station can be heard on the national commercial digital radio multiplex in the UK.

Classic Gold 1152

Oldies station Plymouth Sound 1152 AM relaunched as Classic Gold 1152 on Monday, 7th February 2000. For further information on presenters, the Classic Gold website can be reached by clicking here.


Digital radio station Life launched on Monday, 31st February 2000. The station can only be heard via digital radio.

96.9 Chiltern FM

Bedford-based station B97 Chiltern FM has relaunched as 96.9 Chiltern FM, according to reports. The station has been called B97 since September 1995, when it was acquired by GWR Group, with the Chiltern FM 'suffix' being added a couple of years later. Previous to this, the station went under the name Chiltern Radio 96.9 - the hot fm.


National station Talk Radio has relaunched as talkSport. The station rebranded on 17th January 2000.

Big AM

West Yorkshire-based Classic Gold 1278 & 1530 and oldies station serving Staffordshire and Cheshire, Signal 2 have both relaunched as Big AM.

Imagine FM

Stockport and Macclesfield station Signal FM has relaunched as Imagine FM.
