TEAC steps up with a multi-format receiver - the CR-H258i

TEAC's mid-level multi-format receiver component - the CR-H258i - is a very capable system. A step up from the TEAC CR-H248, the 258i is a more comprehensive hi-fi component catering for a wide variety of formats. Throw a SD card at it, USB dongle loaded with music or simply choose to listen on FM, DAB or to an audio CD and the 258i gives an impressive performance.

Tweak the TEAC CR-H258i's bass and treble controls - if you so wish - and the receiver produces a satisfying sound on Radio 3, Jazz FM and Kiss 101. It's happy with all types of music, bringing energy to Kiss 101's urban tunes and excitement to Jazz FM's arrangements. The 258i doesn't play at ear-splittingly party levels - with 2 x 25 Watts RMS on tap - but this is enough to fill a small to midsize room with sound. There's DAB and FM (with RDS station naming and RadioText) and AM tuner with a total of 70 presets. The Teac is a neat, well-laid out system though station selection using the rotary dial is a little irritating as a lot of turning is required to acccess stations further down the list. The CD is at home with either CD-DA, CD-R/RW or MP3 discs, though USB and SD card files are limited to MP3 format only.

The SD card slot and USB interface are handily located on the front panel, while the iPod docking connector for the optional TEAC DS-20 dock, is hidden away around the back alongside FM and DAB aerial connectors, sub out phono socket and a pair of RCA stereo phono inputs - one with a loop back for monitoring of recordings. There are timer on and sleep timer functions.

The long remote controls iPod functions when a dock is attached.

The TEAC CR-H258i's dimensions are 215 x 110 x 359mm, weighing in at 4.2kg, and is available to buy now, with a price tag of around GBP250.00. A separate DS-20 dock is available for connecting your iPod.

The TEAC CR-H258i could easily fit the bill for a single unit system, if you're looking to save space but appreciate at least a few feet between your speakers.
