BFBS radio has now left the UK-wide commercial DAB digital radio multiplex

BFBS gone from national DAB

Monday, 6th March 2017

BFBS, which has been broadcast on the first UK-wide national DAB digital radio bundle following a three-month trial in January 2008, has now stopped broadcasting to the whole of the UK to concentrate on a number of smaller areas, close to miltary bases.

The station, which produces and transmits programmes to British Forces overseas since 1943, joined the Digital One bundle in 2008 for a trial period, with a permanent slot on the bundle in April 2009. Aimed at Forces personnel and their families, BFBS Radio plays a wide variety of pop and rock music and specialises in on-air messages and requests.

For the time being, BFBS is carrying information about how to continue to listen to its service, on its DAB slot on the national commerical multiplex operated by Digital One, encouraging listeners to download its app or listen online. The station advises that you can listen on superlocal DAB if you live in Portsmouth, Brize Norton (Oxfordshire) and Aldershot & Woking (where you'll also be able to hear BFBS Gurkha Radio (a Nepali language service) and BFBS Beats).

You can also listen on FM and AM (mediumwave) in many parts of the country - check out our radio directory for areas where the station broadcasts, close to military bases.

You can also ask Alexa to play BFBS radio, streamed on your Echo or Echo Dot, or listen via Sky channel 0211 or Freesat Channel 786.

There has not yet been an announcement on which station will use BFBS' space on the digital radio multiplex, though the station is making regular changes to the announcements on its DAB channel, suggesting its continuing presence on the bundle in the absense of an alternative service to take its place may be shortlived. BFBS itself replaced Core 'Fresh Hits for the UK' in 2008.

STOP PRESS Heart 80s replaces BFBS on the Digital One multiplex.
