New transmitters for DAB: Poor signal? Check again - in 2016, more than 230 transmitters were switched on - are you covered?

A significant number of digital radio transmitters for BBC national DAB stations, such as BBC 6 music and 5 live sports extra, national D1 commercial stations, carrying talkSPORT, Classic FM and Capital Xtra, and local digital radio, transmitting local services, were powered up during 2016.

This is in addition to the 45 transmitters carrying stations such as Planet Rock and Absolute 80s, from Sound Digital, on the second UK national commercial digital radio bundle. No further transmitters for Planet Rock and Absolute 80s are planned at the present time.

In Spring and Summer 2016, digital radio coverage was also improved in and around Durham, Nottingham (including Retford), Devon (North Hessary, but carrying Cornwall local DAB), Fareham, Birmingham (Sedgley Beacon), Maidenhead, Horsham & Caterham (Surrey), Tyne and Wear (Whitley Bay), Wellingborough, Cambridge (Cheveley), Peterborough (Stamford and Wisbech), Blackpool, Clacton (Essex) and Tunbridge Wells (Kent) for combinations of BBC national, D1 national commercial and local DAB radio stations for the respective areas, offering a boost to coverage.

Local digital radio in Cornwall also saw a boost in 2016, with transmitters for Newquay, St. Austell, St. Just and Truro. Similarly, Kent saw a significant boost to coverage for its local radio stations with transmitters powered up at Etchinghill, Hythe, Tunbridge Wells, Dunkirk, as well as Folkestone and Swingate earlier in the year.

The local DAB bundle serving Glasgow also benefitted from new transmitters at Helensburgh, Firth of Clyde and Milburn Muir.

Manchester local DAB also recieved a boost from new transmitters in 2016 at Winter Hill, Sutton Common, Saddleworth, Littleborough and on the Sunley Building.

There were also boosts for local DAB in Staffordshire (Mow Cop and Stafford), Bradford (including Luddenden), Northern Ireland (Newcastle, NI and South Newry), Inverness (Elgin), Edinburgh (Athelstaneford and Stirling), Lancashire (Darwen), Tyne and Wear (Morpeth, Weardale and Shotleyfield), Liverpool (St. Johns Beacon, Billinge Hill and Hope Mountain).

In all, more than 180 digital radio transmitters were powered up in 2016 carrying BBC national, D1 national commerical and local DAB radio services.
