Friday, 28th July 2006 Ofcom plans to licence new areas in DAB digital radio expansion
The broadcasting regulator, Ofcom, has announced its plans for future licencing of local and regional DAB digital radio multiplexes. This information has been made available alongside details of the next twelve local DAB digital radio multiplex licences to be advertised.
The plans aim to bring local DAB digital radio to new areas not currently served by a local multiplex.
In alphabetical order, these areas are listed below (with the corresponding BBC service(s) to be carried on the multiplex listed also):
Ceredigion and Powys
Dumfries and Galloway
Geurnsey/Alderney/Sark
Harrogate and the Yorkshire Dales
Heads of the South Wales Valleys
Jersey
Morecambe Bay
North Devon
North and West Cumbria
North Wales
Orkney and Shetland
Salisbury
Scottish Borders
Somerset
Suffolk
Warwickshire
West Dorset
Western Scotland
West Norfolk
The radio regulator also intends to advertise a second tier of DAB digital radio multiplexes for areas already served by local or regional DAB digital radio stations. Licences due to be advertised in the future include:
