Saturday, 27th May 2006 BBC engages Arquiva to build 10 new transmitters
The BBC has appointed Arquiva (formerly NTL Broadcast) to build at least ten new DAB digital radio transmitters to carry national digital radio services from the BBC.
Up to 160 further transmitters are on the cards from 2007 onwards as the broadcaster increases the coverage of national DAB services such as BBC 6 Music and BBC7.
Two of the transmitters planned for 2006 will be at Llanddona and Great Massingham. The latter site is already transmitting stations on the Digital One national commercial multiplex.
The BBC has recently switched on transmitters at Hull, offering coverage of BBC national digital radio stations to 440,000 people, Canterbury in Kent (53,000 potential listeners), Aberystwyth in Wales (34,000 potential listeners), Redruth in Cornwall (250,000) and Kendal (42,000 people).
