GMG drops Jazz FM in North-West in favour of Smooth format

Radio operator Guardian Media Group (GMG Radio) has revealed it is winding up its Jazz FM station covering Liverpool, Manchester and the North-West to launch a new sound for the region in Spring 2004.

The company has stated it sees the name Jazz FM as "a hindrance to attracting new listeners" in the region and will reformat the station as Smooth FM, bringing more music from artists such as Rod Stewart, Jamie Cullum, Marvin Gaye and Luther Vandross to the playlist.

The new station, Smooth FM, is set to debut on 1st March 2004. Jazz FM will be retained in London, where its format is more successful and on regional DAB digital radio multiplexes, where it is broadcast alongside Smooth Digital.

GMG was recently unsuccessful in its bid to bring the Smooth format to Glasgow: the company was up against 11 other bids for the new FM licence for the city. Saga Radio will launch in the city of Glasgow in 2004.
