BBC expands coverage of national DAB digital stations to Essex, Wilts and Suffolk

Two more DAB digital radio transmitters have been switched on for the first time in Manningtree - on the Essex/Suffolk border - and in Chippenham, Wiltshire, to bring plays, books and comedy channel BBC7, Asian station BBC Asian Network and sports commentary station BBC Five Live Sports Extra to new listeners.

Mounted at Naish Hill, a new transmitter will enable around 135,000 people to tune in to services on the BBC's national DAB multiplex in and around Chippenham.

The transmitter will also improve the signal for around 200,000 potential listeners.

More people in Essex and Suffolk - around 540,000 - will now be able to tune in to the BBC's national services, thanks to the introduction of a transmitter at Manningtree.

The introduction of new transmitters is part of the BBC's plan to offer coverage of its national DAB services to 85 percent of the population by the end of 2004.

Listeners with a DAB digital radio can receive the new services by performing an "Autotune" or "Autoscan" with their tuner or radio. The national BBC services now available in these areas are as follows:

  • BBC Asian Network

  • BBC Radio 1

  • BBC 1Xtra

  • BBC Radio 2

  • BBC Radio 3

  • BBC Radio 4

  • BBC Radio Five Live

  • BBC Five Live Sports Extra

  • BBC 6 Music

  • BBC 7

  • BBC World Service

To receive DAB digital radio stations in the UK, you need a DAB digital radio - a new type of radio that can receive digital radio broadcasts. For more information, read our guide to DAB digital radio and discover more about the tuners available to buy.
