BBC expands coverage of 6 Music and 1Xtra in further DAB digital radio drive

Three more DAB digital radio transmitters have been powered up to bring 6 Music, urban channel 1Xtra and spoken word station BBC7 to the people of Bath, Salisbury and the Isle of Wight.

Up to 50,000 more people will be able to tune in to services on the BBC's national DAB multiplex in and around Bath, whilst in Salisbury another 65,000 people can now listen to the BBC's new stations including Five Live Sports Extra.

A transmitter serving a huge area for 760,000 new listeners has been added at Rowridge to serve Portsmouth, Southampton, Isle of Wight and surrounding areas. The addition of the new transmitter boosts the signal for another 180,000 people.

The introduction of new transmitters is part of the BBC's plan to offer coverage of its national DAB services to 85 percent of the population by the end of 2004.

The BBC announced previously it had launched transmitters in Dover and Bromsgrove as part of the plan.

Listeners with a DAB digital radio can receive the new services by performing an "Autotune" or "Autoscan" with their tuner or radio. The services now available are as follows:

  • BBC Asian Network

  • BBC Radio 1

  • BBC 1Xtra

  • BBC Radio 2

  • BBC Radio 3

  • BBC Radio 4

  • BBC Radio Five Live

  • BBC Five Live Sports Extra

  • BBC 6 Music

  • BBC 7

  • BBC World Service

To receive DAB digital radio stations in the UK, you need a DAB digital radio - a new type of radio that can receive digital radio broadcasts. For more information, read our guide to DAB digital radio and discover more about the tuners available to buy.
