Virgin sets sights on new FM station for Glasgow

National Virgin Radio has lodged its application to run a new, localised rock music station serving Glasgow. With a West of Scotland-based "Rock 'n' Roll Football" show, the station will combine news and sport with new rock talent and classic rock hits.

Billy Connolly has already been snapped up by the station to present a rock and roots show, as part of a plan to provide thirty hours of specialist music programming throughout the week.

Virgin Radio also hopes to tap into the local music scene, with local gig and music guides and a showcase programme for local bands at live venues.

The station has support from local bands and homegrown talent including Idlewild, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer Colin Macintyre (aka Mull Historical Society), the Cosmic Rough Riders, and mercury award nominees The Delgados.

An announcement as to who has won the licence is expected later in the year.
