Plymouth and Cornwall digiplex ad announced

The announcement of two new multiplexes covering the city and county of Plymouth and a large area of Cornwall could allow for a switch-on date of late 2004 for local digital radio in the south west.

It is understood a bid for the DAB multiplex will involve a consortium comprised of local radio operators UKRD Group and NOWdigital. These companies have already registered their interest in bringing Pirate FM 102 and Plymouth Sound FM to the digital airwaves.

NOWdigital already operate a string of local multiplexes across the midlands and along the M4 corridor, but this is the first time UKRD Group has become involved with a digital bid.

Two blocks - 12A and 11B - will be given over to any new services, which must include a simulcast of BBC Radio Devon and BBC Radio Cornwall in the respective coverage area.

The closing date for applications is in mid-September, with an announcement of any licence award due in the run-up to Christmas.

To receive DAB digital radio stations in the UK, you need a DAB digital radio - a new type of radio that can receive digital radio broadcasts. For more information, read our guide to DAB digital radio and discover more about the tuners available to buy.
