Swansea on for local DAB launch in one year

Radio operators The Wireless Group and Emap Digital Radio have been awarded the local DAB licence for Swansea. The new multiplex should be up and running by January 2004.

TWG's top 40 station 96.4FM The Wave would be joined on DAB by classic hits AMer Swansea Sound alongside several new services including dance station Kiss and current pop music brand Smash Hits radio.

BBC services Radio Wales and Welsh-language station Radio Cymru would also take their place on the multiplex.

A January 2004 launch is planned, with transmitters being added at Llanelli and Camarthen to serve these nearby areas.
