Reading sees brand new station as application for city status falters.

Reading will have a truly local radio station next year, but the working title of the station is rather unfortunate.

New City FM will serve the town and unitary authority area of Reading, but in a cruel twist the working title of the station will definitely have to be altered for the station's launch. The town had applied for city status, but has since found out that its application has been turned down. The station has already been dubbed "No City FM". The station's application was led by John Madejski.

The winning station's backers include Guardian Media Group - publishers of the Reading Evening Post - and Newbury company Milestone Group, headed up by TV presenter Andy Craig.

Other applicants included former MP Sir Anthony Durant's Reading FM, whose shareholders and presenters originate from the town. 107FM - another applicant with local merits - was also left disappointed. Juice Reading and Crown FM were the other contenders.
