South Hampshire's multiplex brings in two applicants

Southampton, Portsmouth, Winchester and other areas of South Hampshire could be tuning into several new stations early next year as the advertisement to run the local radio multiplex for the area has just closed.

Capital Radio Digital, the first interested party, would bring Power FM, Ocean FM and Capital Gold to the digital platform. It would also negotiate with Scottish Radio Holdings to broadcast Wave 105.2 on DAB digital radio.

DAB digital radio logo                             Easy listening and talk radio station Saga Radio, modern rock station The Storm and adult contemporary and world music station Passion for the Planet would make up the other selection of full-time stations.

Student radio from SBN would share a channel with SouthCity FM and the radio station aimed at a young audience abracaDABra would timeshare with Southampton Hospital Radio.

Solent Digital Radio Limited, a company formed from Emap and Scottish Radio Holding's digital arms, are proposing to broadcast Power FM, Ocean FM and Capital Gold alongside Wave 105.2, subject to agreement with Capital Radio. Dance anthem station Kiss, continuous country music station 3C and Southampton football-and-music station The Saint from Radio First will broadcast alongside an easy listening and rock station. An access radio station, with contributions from Angel Radio and Chaos Digital Media is also in the pipeline.

The South Hampshire multiplex would also have to carry the existing service BBC Radio Solent. Capital Radio Digital plan to have their multiplex up and running by January next year, while Solent Digital are planning a pre-Christmas launch, should either be successful in winning the licence.
