No contest for licences as areas major broadcasters win digital vote

In an unsurprising announcement (due to the lack of competition for both licences), the RA has awarded the Bradford and Huddersfield local digital radio multiplex licence to the sole applicant, TWG Digital and the Exeter and Torbay licence to the only interested party: NOW Digital Limited.

Both winners already broadcast commercial stations in the area and will introduce more new services when each multiplex launches. In South Devon, this is to be in the second quarter of 2002 and in Bradford and Huddersfield services will be switched on in September 2002.

Gemini FM and Classic Gold Digital will take their place on the Devon multiplex, as existing services for the area. The local BBC service, BBC Radio Devon will also feature. Also in the pipeline are:

  • Passion - A new digital service playing adult contemporary and world music.

  • Country - A new digital service playing country music, originally announced as Ritz Radio but now with a provider yet to be confirmed.

  • Flix - A new digital service playing music from films and shows: currently available on the internet and on the Coventry local DAB multiplex.

  • Dance - A new digital service providing a modern dance music service. This service may launch as Vibe, which will be heard on several other local multiplexes.

  • (extra service) - A new service launching within two years of the others, the format of which will be announced at a later date.

Long-serving stations The Pulse, Sunrise FM and Big AM will form two of the stations on the Bradford and Huddersfield multiplex; these are already available on FM and AM. The local BBC service, BBC Radio Leeds, has reserved capacity on the multiplex. Also in the pipeline are:

  • 60s, 70s, 80s - A new digital service playing music from the last four decades.

  • Young Asian - A new digital service catering for the young Asian communities.

  • Flix - A new digital service playing music from films and shows: currently available on the internet and on the Coventry local DAB multiplex.

  • Kiss - A new digital service playing current and classic dance anthems, already available on the Leeds local digital multiplex.

In other news, Thamesmead station Millennium 106.8 has held on to its FM licence for another 8 years. The station had competition from Starmela, an Asian community station promising music, news and features for the local population. Also in the running was Unity FM, which aimed to be a cross-cultural station playing hits from the last four decades.
