Real Radio in Liverpool from May 1st

Liverpool will be waking up to the sound of Real Radio from 1st May as the station launches on local digital radio for the area. Real Radio, a Guardian Media Group station, currently plays adult-aimed current and classic pop music to listeners in South Wales. The station also offers talk and phone-in shows. The service in South Wales can be heard on an ordinary FM radio or over the web, but listeners in Liverpool must first purchase a DAB digital radio to be able to tune into the new Real Radio.

The local digital multiplex for Liverpool is part of seven local digital radio licences owned by Emap Performance, the magazines-to-radio publishing group. GMG have signed an agreement with Emap to carry Real Radio on all seven muliplexes, which include those currently available in Tyne & Wear and South Yorkshire. The DAB local digital radio services for Leeds, Teeside, Humberside and Central Lancashire will also carry Real Radio at launch. Shaun Gregory, Emap Digital Radio managing director, said:

"We are thrilled to be working with GMG and Real Radio will offer real choice for the people of Liverpool."

It is anticipated that Real Radio will launch on the multiplexes for Tyne & Wear and South Yorkshire on 1st May also, but this has yet to be confirmed.

The launch of Real Radio in Liverpool follows news that The Wireless Group is to remove its Big City Radio stations from both the Tyne & Wear and South Yorkshire multiplexes. Real Radio is to be the replacement for Big City Radio on both of these muliplexes. It is understood that cost issues were involved in The Wireless Group's decision not to continue broadcasting on digital radio in Newcastle and Sheffield.
