Freeplay Devo DAB digital radio with FM - reviewed by Andy
The Devo is a DAB/FM portable radio with a difference. This radio can be powered by AC/DC adapter or by internal rechargeable batteries. The batteries can be recharged via the AC adapter or a by a built-in alternator, which is operated by a fold-away winding handle. In DAB mode the operating time is obviously less than in FM mode, however, having the ability to give the batteries a boost with the winding handle means you won't miss the end of that favourite programme if the batteries die.
The Freeplay Devo has analogue FM tuning and sensitivity is excellent. Even normally weak stations came through with the telescopic antenna fully retracted and folded down.
The DAB section is of the standard type with all the normal functions found on the evoke models. There are five preset buttons. The LCD panel has blue backlighting with white characters and a two line display. DAB performance is excellent. I own five other DAB sets which include two Evoke models, and the Devo is up there with the best of them when it comes to performance.
The Freeplay Devo DAB digital radio is a single-speaker set but has a stereo line output via RCA sockets and a 3.5mm stereo headphone socket. Free standing audio quality is good considering the size of the loudspeaker.
The Devo is very compact and the approximate overall dimensions are - H 125mm x W 200mm x D 100mm. At these dimensions a carrying handle would have been appropriate, however, the manufacture obviously thought otherwise. Most adult males will be able to hold the radio in one hand, but for others carrying the set will be awkward.
I am impressed by the Devo - a good performer and eco-friendly!
