My Kingdom for a DAB digital radio
Sunday 09 Feb 03

I love the new DAB digital radio set I got the other week and the sound is great, but my local station Kingdom FM is not on digital. I wonder how long it will be before the likes of Kingdom FM also broadcast on digital, for I like to hear local news weather and traval as well as music.

Bad news, Darren. From our "Air today archive" 5th November 2002 (which needs to be put online!) :
"Perth and Dundee's local DAB digital radio services will be a little thinner on the ground, as two existing FM stations have decided against joining the area's multiplex. Both Kingdom FM and Wave 102 had been in negotiations with multiplex operator Score Digital, but the companies have failed to come to an agreement regarding carriage. There is no news yet of any replacement services."

Kingdom have turned down the opportunity, probably due to carriage costs. Ed.

How about bringing back Galaxy?
Sunday 09 Feb 03

I know that GWR Group bought Galaxy 101 last summer and re-launched the station as the "Vibe" brand. We have Galaxy 105 on NTL Digital, but could you please tell me if Chrysalis will be planning on bringing Galaxy back to South Wales and The West on "DAB Radio"?

James

Galaxy 101 wasn't making any money down in South Wales and The West. It would add insult to injury to bring Yorkshire's Galaxy 105 to the area! In any case, a carriage deal has been struck with MXR Digital by vibe 101 owners Vibe Radio Services, so I doubt the Radio Authority would allow another similar service on the multiplex. Still, never say never! Ed.

Is NOW Wiltshire really up and running?
Tuesday 08 Feb 03

Reading the news update on this site: there is an update stating the Wiltshire multiplex is now up and running. I am picking up Classic Gold, GWR Bath & Capital Disney, but none of the others here in West Wiltshire, e.g. BBC Radio Wiltshire. I am picking all the others from NOWdigital's Bristol multiplex, e.g. Kiss, SBN, Saga Radio, etc., but none of these are showing up on NOW Wiltshire as yet!

What I am getting on my display is 3G Serv1 through to 6.

We took the launch date of 7th February from NOWdigital's website. It sounds as if these other services will show up in a few days - usually a service label like "3G Serv 1" indicates that part of the ensemble is still in the "testing" stage - at least we know something will appear at some stage! NTL will have a handle on any transmitter problems, but the multiplex is bound to be up and running as soon as any gremlins have been sorted out. Be sure to let us know if the stations don't appear soon, so we can let everyone know. Thanks. Ed.

Why not BBC Radio Lincolnshire on DAB?
Tuesday 04 Feb 03

I have purchased a DAB digital radio for Christmas and I'm pleased to say that reception is very good indeed in the Humberside area. The local multiplex is very good indeed but I hope that the new regional multiplex for Yorkshire and Humberside is going to be successful when it is launched in June this year. One concern, however: Why can't BBC Radio Lincolnshire be added into the Humberside multiplex?

Michael
via feedback form

I'm sure the regional DAB services will be a great addition to those already broadcasting in Humberside. When the multiplex for Humberside was advertised, there was a requirement for BBC Radio Humberside to be carried on the multiplex, as a condition of the licence to run the multiplex. No such requirement exists for BBC Radio Lincolnshire, so, only if there's space on the multiplex will we see BBC Radio Lincolshire join its sister station. As the multiplex is nearly full-up, with any space being taken up in the future by Kerrang!, it's unlikely BBC Radio Lincs will be carried on DAB for the foreseeable future. The only mux in England I know of that carries two local BBC stations is the Wolverhampton multiplex, housing both BBC WM and Radio Shropshire. Ed.

Battery Life of Ministry of Sound portable DAB?
Tuesday 04 Feb 03

That Ministry of Sound portable DAB looks very nice..... however the important fact about it is what sort of battery life can be expected from it? The Perstel radio is only about 6 hours on an AA battery which is not a lot... do you know what it is on this new model?

Eddie
via e-mail

As I understand it, the Ministry of Sound portable radio can use rechargeable batteries and is supplied with a recharger. It can also run on AAs too. The unit's display is backlit (this can be turned off to preserve battery life), but I've read that battery life is better that of the Perstel, at about 12 hours, less if the backlight is used, though I've not seen "official" figures. Interestingly enough, the Ministry of Sound radio is manufactured by Alba and measures 65x100x20mm. Ed.

From over the water...
Tuesday 04 Feb 03

Just wanted to thank you for having the best, most comprehensive directory of great UK stations. Here on Cape Cod in the US, we have dreadful radio - and US broadcasters have mucked up our domestic web radio. We really appreciate the great stations you folks have across the puddle. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for your kind comments, Joe. I really enjoy producing the site and I'm glad you've been able to listen in from across the water. Ed.

Near FM
Thursday 30 Jan 03

Anyone else noticed that the "near CD" quality promised for DAB has degraded to "near FM if you are lucky"..Stations like Oneword are like second-generation cassette.

Robert
via feedback form

Hmm, with any luck the spare space given by the closure of ITN News Radio and Bloomberg will be used to boost the bitrates of other stations. Unlikely, though. It has to be said, Oneword's bitrate has remained the same since the launch of the multiplex. Ed.

Bad Reception
Thursday 30 Jan 03

I bought a Pure Evoke 1 less than two weeks ago, and for the first week, the reception was fine. However this week, it has been difficult to get a signal for the London multiplex stations, and the national stations such as Virgin and Life are suffering with interference. In fact, Virgin was so bad this morning, I gave up and reverted to my FM radio.

Could you tell me if you are aware of any transmitter maintenance that is taking place at the moment, or could the new radio be faulty?

Zippy
via feedback form

Any maintenance to a multiplex is usually listed on the website of the multiplex operator - you can find links to these above the DAB service listings within our station directory. I know there have been a few problems with some multiplexes recently. For example, Ceri wrote to us today to say that Vibe 101 and Real Radio were both absent from the South Wales and West multiplex earlier today.

If you are having problems with all 5 multiplexes, it's most likely to be a problem with the radio itself. You could try repositioning the aerial first. Failing that, make your way to the Pure Digital website, click on the support button and ask for some advice! I'm sure the guys who make the Evoke would be more than happy to help. Ed.

Intrigued of Norfolk
Tuesday 28 Jan 03

I have just read with interest on your site about a new service i.e. country or easy listening on DAB in the Norfolk area by March 2003. Could you elaborate please ? Channel? Name? Any details are handy, because it sounds great, but although I am in the area, nothing has been announced so I am intrigued!

Sandra
via e-mail

The station will be part of the local DAB digital radio multiplex for Norwich and surrounding areas, which is due to launch in March this year. For more information about DAB digital radio, see our background guide and frequently asked questions about DAB. Coverage maps (to let you know if you have a good chance of receiving the multiplex) will be available nearer the time. Although no formal announcement has been made, I would suggest an easy listening station is more likely (as it's on other multiplexes nearby) and there's a good chance it will be Saga Radio Digital, which you can listen to on our listen live pages. Ed.

Chyra crisis
Tuesday 28 Jan 03

Chyra is not working. For months now, when you go onto it, they play the last bit of a Mary J. Blige song and it then goes on to another song that plays for a few seconds and then stops. This has been happening since around September or so and it is a shame because this site used to be really good to listen to. I e-mailed the people who supply this station back in December but it seems nothing was done about it.

Jennifer
via e-mail

I can't believe this one! I tuned in tonight and found the same thing! Four months like this? I've fired off an e-mail to Kikido support, but if anyone from Kikido or Capital Interactive is reading this - maybe take a look or update us with a new URL? I used to love Chyra too when I could be tuned in over the net for ages without annoying anyone else! Ed.
