DAB and Sky confusion

I am a Sky Digital subscriber living in Bournemouth. I understand this is broadcast on 11B. Is there any way I can pick up midlands radio (on 11C) via my box through the additional channels service? Thanks.

Andrew

I think there is some confusion here. The channel 11B note refers to the DAB digital radio multiplex (which can be picked up by a DAB digital radio tuner) and has nothing to do with Sky or its multiplexes. Local DAB digital radio isn't due to launch in Bournemouth until March. A few of the more popular digital radio services, such as The Storm and Xfm are carried on Sky in addition to appearing on many local DAB digital radio multiplexes. However, as there's only so much space on Sky and for cost issues, it's unlikely local services will be carried. As for the additional services - I can't comment as I do not have Sky. I'll have a look at our digital radio pages because I think this is from where the confusion has arisen! Ed.

Look to the Sky

I am a digital radio virgin, desperately seeking the knowledge to go digital. I live in lovely Norfolk where terrestrial digital radio seems scheduled to arrive at about the same time as the trains will run on time. People tell me I need to get my hands on a Sky dish and digi box, and these can be connected to my stereo tuner (non-DAB) and lo - digital radio is mine. Is the full story? How much will it cost? How many stations will I be able to receive? Etc. etc.

Fred

We can help you out with stations, check out our Sky satellite radio list. Not sure about the cost of the kit nowadays - can anyone oblige? Ed.

Why not try our listings?

Friends of mine who live in Austwick, The Dales, and used to listen to longwave 252, because of reception problems. Now they find that 252 is a non-stop sports channel, can you direct us to a music station that has strong enough signals to be received in their area please.

Paul
via e-mail

Fresh AM is my first thought, perhaps Classic Gold of West Yorkshire might reach. Have you tried our Yorkshire listings to find frequencies? The best way is to try tuning in. Ed.

East and West Sussex

Just a short note to let you know that Sovereign Radio is actually based in Hailsham, East Sussex, which is about 7 miles north of Eastbourne. They are not in West Sussex as listed - hope this helps.

Southern FM has two relays - 102FM Hastings and 96.9FM Newhaven, both taking the 102.4FM feed (not that they're different - just different ads).

Andrew

Thanks, chaps. I had thought the Southern relays were no longer in use, but I'll reinstate them. Ed.

What no audio?

Is it just my computer, or is there no audio when you click on play on any of the SRH stations? There's been feedback from other people, but no matter what I do, there is nothing coming out!

Vinnie
via feedback form

Well, to be fair there is a notice on the page that says 'Some of the stations below are now streaming audio via their websites. Please click on the links below.' Forth have also been in touch and given us more 'direct' links to their audio launch pages. Which is nice of them. I think a lot of our visitors will be glad to hear that some of the Scottish stations are back online again, after such a long absence, no matter how we link to them. Ed.

Key bored

Hi could you kindly let us know what's happening to Key 103 Manchester, the best radio station in the world. Hope you can get it sorted out quick. Many thanks for all the great work.

Ivor

The Key 103 audio link was never an 'official' link. It was provided by a presenter at the station, as far as I remember. I can't remember where I found it and unfortunately I don't know if the address has been updated since. The station is still on the air on 103FM in Manchester, of course. Now, does anyone have anything interesting to ask? Ed.

Missing... presumed...

I use Internet radio all day but recently I have been unable to receive Ritz 1035 'broadcasts'. Do you know what has happened?

Cliff
via e-mail

The Ritz website is down at the moment. I would hope that it is getting an overhaul, as Ritz is going to be on digital radio from the end of January in London as well as 1035AM. I would expect streaming to return when the website is back up. 3C Continuous Cool Country streaming is back, however you'll have to go their website to listen. Ed.

Erm, had a look at the Kerrang website, not too sure if Kerrang Radio is still going - I've a feeling they may have pulled the plug on this venture as I can't now find a link to the stream at the Kerrang site. Unless anyone knows differently, that is. Ed.

Launching a digital radio station

I am trying to find out the cost of setting up a digital radio station. Numerous calls to Sky in London have so far ended in frustrating cul-de-sac voice mail messages.

Nicholas
via e-mail

I would contact Digital One, the national commercial DAB multiplex operator. A great many of the stations on this multiplex also broadcast on Sky, if this is the way you want to go. They may be able to offer advice. Also try the Digital Radio Development Bureau. We've been asked this type of question before, and I'm afraid I was unable to offer much help. However, I have heard carriage costs on Sky start at (the low side of) 6 figures per annum. Let me know how you get on. Ed.

Select a radio station

PLEASE can you tell me what has happened to a trial radio station for Rotherham called SELECT FM 106.6? I am fed up of so-called local radio for Rotheram, which ends up coming from Sheffield. Please can you tell me why in an area of 250,000 people, there is not a separate station for Rotheram?

Mark
via e-mail

Well, there is some good news. Barnsley is on the working list of new analogue radio licences up for grabs - and it's first on the working list (see below), which means it should be advertised first, early in 2002. Okay, it's in a different part of South Yorkshire, but at least it's not Sheffield! If the Select RSL went well, it may pursuade the Radio Authority that the Rotheram area needs a new station, too. Why not make your feelings known to the Radio Authority? Incidentally, RSL information is linked to from the foot of our maps page. Don't forget, South Yorkshire's new FM station Real Radio will be on air this Spring, too. Ed.

Radio Authority 'Working List' of areas for new analogue local licences

The Authority also plans to advertise new analogue local licences in the following areas (in the following sequence):

- Barnsley
- Yeovil
- Gairloch and Loch Ewe
- Maidstone

The sequence of licence advertisements for the final four areas on the 'working list' (below) will depend upon the resolution of various frequency planning issues, and has yet to be decided:

- Buxton
- Helensburgh
- Livingston (West Lothian)
- North Norfolk

BBC Radio Lincs on DAB?

When can I expect to receive BBC Radio Lincolnshire on my DAB tuner? I can only get Lincs FM sometimes. National stations are received with an excellent signal in Sleaford with a loft di-pole aerial.

Peter
via feedback form

If there's space on the multiplex, BBC Radio Lincolnshire may be added later. Note that a separate multiplex for Lincolnshire is not planned, according to the digital multiplex timetable published by the Radio Authority. It's not unusual to see two BBC local services on the same multiplex - the Wolverhampton multiplex carries both BBC Radio Shropshire and WM. This may involve adjusting the audio quality of other services on the emap-owned Humberside multiplex, though. Ed.

Metro/Downtown/Cool FM

I wrote to you a while ago about Metro Radio (which I now see has n/a next to it on your site). Any further news on when and if it might become available on your website?

Ian
via e-mail

I would like to know when Downtown Radio and Cool FM will broadcasting again on the net.

Steve
via e-mail

Sorry, chaps, no news as yet. Downtown Radio and Cool FM both come from the same stable as a number of other Scottish stations (i.e. owned by Scottish Radio Holdings) that stopped streaming a long, long time ago. SRH held a 25pc stake in the company BroadcastEurope, a major streaming provider, which is no longer around. When BroadcastEurope ceased, so did the live audio. The station to look out for is sister station 3C - if that starts streaming, chances are the rest will follow suit. I'm doubtful whether Metro will be made available on the net in the short term. Sister stations TFM (Teeside) and Radio City (Liverpool) aren't streaming, leaving Metro as the only station to have actually broadcast on the net for a short time under the new design of Emap websites. Ed.

Best advice for receiving DAB?

Could you please advise of the requirements for an aerial for a DAB radio. I am currently thinking of buying a system and require information on the aerial requirements needed to obtain optimum reception. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Ron
via e-mail

I'm afraid I'm technically challenged when it comes to information like this. From what I have read (on our pages, in fact!), certainly the aerial needs to be mounted vertically, as the DAB radio signal is transmitted with vertical polarisation only - a dipole fixed this way should work fine. Preferably in the loft, of course. I've read that there are aerials specifically for DAB radio and I believe Maplins now stock them. You could try the Confederation of Aerial Industries on 0208 902 8998 for advice. You can check out the shop at Videologic to get an idea of what's available. Anyone else have any good bookmarks for websites about aerials? I'd like to be enlightened too. Ed.

Wake up and smell the koko!

GWR Group's koko.com seems to be gradually making a comeback. At the moment I can only find pages for GWR Bristol, but the koko site seems to gain a new area each day. No doubt Leicester will be one of the last! They don't seem to have left any space on the map for their Marcher stations which seems odd; however for the first time they are listing Classic Gold stations, too.

Daniel Cardwell
via feedback form

The koko site looks great, but it's now even less obvious how to navigate back to the front map page. I thought this was the most awkward aspect of the original site. I think some of the Marcher stations have their own, scaled-down sites outside of koko. Though they don't look as pretty. Ed.

Be a scholar and check the link

First of all, I think your site is great! However, for the last few days I've tried to listen to BBC Radio Oxford (as I do on a daily basis) it doesn't seem to be streaming properly. On the list of news stations there seem to be a lot of broken links.

Jane
via feedback form from Perth in Australia

Sorry you're having problems, Jane. You wrote a while back and, having just checked the link, it seems to be working fine now. I need to run our link checker over the pages again to catch any dead links. One of these is ITN News Radio, which now seems to be available on national digital radio only, following a restructure of the ITN website. IRN has also relaunched its site and moved its audio stream. Ed.

Now sporting a digital radio

Thanks for your patience. I'm now back online after a short absence and, while I was away, picked up the Wavefinder digital radio. Watch out for a review coming soon. Ed

Only 35?

I live in Leicester and have a Technics DAB Tuner fed by a Discone antenna in my loft. Could you tell me how many stations I should receive in my area? Where can I get a list of stations and frequencies? At the present time I can receive 35 stations I know about.

Robert
via e-mail

You may like to refer to the correspondence from Simon Parry, below. This will answer your first question. You can refer to our national station listings and also those for Coventry and Birmingham to find out a list of current and future stations - just look for the dab icon. I've held off putting up frequency block information as this is probably not necessary in future tuners. Like AM/FM radio, it is difficult to give an exact number of stations that you can actually receive, but you may improve on 35 stations. If you find you can receive more local multiplexes, please let me know so I can pass on the information. Ed

Simon Parry wrote back suggesting a visit to his website, which gives a list of all the digital stations he can pick up in Leicester and on which blocks. Definitely worth a look - it's also on our links page under "Centre Radio and Leicester Sound". I would have counted them myself but I ran out of fingers and toes. Ed.

Before the Sun rose...

8th November 2001

I read with vivid interest your article on Wear FM. I was a director of the Wearside Broadcasting Company who fought long and hard with University of Sunderland to take control of Wear FM to save it from an agonising death. We decided to go it alone after being strung along by the management of Wear FM for such along time. Wear FM managed to retain its licence, which baffled our group, and was totally saddened to learn that, within 6 weeks of having it renewed, it sold it to the Minster Group.

Paul Andersson
via e-mail

I had always thought that Wear FM didn't have its licence renewed; instead it was awarded to the operators of Sun City 103.4, but after reading Paul's e-mail, this appears not to be the case. Can Paul or anyone else clarify? Ed.

Paul kindly wrote back with more information and I'll update the relevant page in good time. Ed.

A Star is born?

Short of having nothing better to do, and hearing the news about X-Cel's transformation into Star 107.1, I checked the Whois records for other stations in the UKRD stable. Did you know that Star967.co.uk (KLFM for the future, maybe?) has also been registered by UKRD, also it seems Star1077 (WFM - a recent purchase from Westcom) and Star1072 (The Falcon in Stroud) are taken. I notice some domains are still available - Star962 isn't there as a possible name change for Revolution, but I did always like that name anyway. What do you make of this?

Rob

Pure speculation, of course, but if the Star brand is successful in Anglia, perhaps it will be extended to King's Lynn or other areas? Why not cover your bases for any future branding and stop potential cybersquatters - I would. Ed.

DAB in Dublin

Is it possible to get DAB radio in the Republic of Ireland?

Gerard, Dublin.
via feedback form

Yes, it is possible. However, you're limited to Today FM and World Radio Network (WRN) - the latter is an international news station on our Northern Ireland page, if you're interested in a link. RTE have space on the national multiplex serving the Republic for their national stations (Lyric, 2FM, Radio 1 and newcomer RNag Gaelic cultural radio), but according to the WorldDAB website, they're waiting for a wider uptake of digital radio (i.e. for cheaper receivers to come along!) before they restart their digital transmissions; that is, unless anyone knows any different! Ed.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After all the effort...

Yes - we have five applicants for the city of Chester and no applications for the South Flintshire area. This is despite the area being well served by a local group who completed 8 RSLs and went a long way to have the area put on the RA's working list. But, sadly, just at a time when they needed it most, financial backers for the application pulled the plug and North East Wales once again was left out.

via feedback form

That is, indeed, a great shame. A new station was well overdue for the area, surely. Ed.

Back to Buxton

I live in Leek (North Staffordshire). I have just read the e-mail from Simon Parry, Leicester (below, Ed.) about DAB in Buxton. If he can pick up both the Birmingham and Coventry multiplexes, might I (being 12 miles from Buxton) be able to get these muxes, too? Does anyone have any DAB coverage maps, as this would be useful.

Andy P
via feedback form

The standard coverage maps will only tell you if it's likely you will be able to pick up DAB digital radio in your area. What is needed, as you suggest, is some way of finding out how far local multiplexes will 'travel'. With FM/AM radio it's cheap and simple to find out if you can tune in to distant stations, but with digital radio a certain amount of guesswork comes into play before you shell out for a DAB tuner. It sounds as if the coverage areas for digital stations are larger than their FM/AM counterparts. However, I could start a list of 'nearby multiplexes', which could be added to our listings, so that visitors from a given town can find out if they can hear stations on other, more distant multiplexes. Of course, without resorting to building a 40 foot aerial in the back garden to do so! This could then be added to some sort of map. Simon's started us off with Leicester, but can anyone else add to the list, I wonder? (sustained silence?) Ed.

Patron Saint of radio?

About "The Saint" on Sky digital channel 899 - is there any way to get access to this station as I can't find a link to it on the web.

Billy, via e-mail

"The Saint" is run by Radio First plc - they have a couple of other stations for Chelsea and Aston Villa football clubs. Unfortunately, if you don't live in the East and West Meridian TV region, you won't be able to listen through Sky satellite as the coverage area for "The Saint" is limited. You can, however, listen via our live links to BBC local radio commentary on match days.

Chris Eden writes with some useful advice, that indeed proves it is possible to pick up The Saint. He says that "it is possible to listen to "The Saint" on Sky Digital, even if you live outside the Meridian TV area. Go into the Add Channels menu (Press Services, Then 4, then 4 again) and tune into 12.324v. Then highlight "The Saint" and press the Yellow button and Select. The Saint will now be in your Other Channels menu, which can be accessed by pressing Services, then 6."

Thanks, Chris. One thing I forgot to point out earlier is that our correspondent is from across the waters in Washington, so he will definitely need to follow your advice to be able to listen in. I would imagine the full Sky package is available over there?

Chris Eden writes to say "unfortunately Sky Digital's satellite beam does not cover the USA, nor is the Sky package available to the USA, so The Saint (currently) can't be received across the Atlantic."

Thanks again, Chris. Sounds as if Billy will have to listen to the BBC's commentary on our listen live : football page. Ed

Thanks for the new link, Sharon. The Energy FM website has the information you're looking for. You may have already found this on a return visit to the Energy website. Radio Solway and Radio Tweed

I was looking for Radio Solway which I was told used to cover the Solway Firth and Dumfries. I couldn't find it on your very useful directory, does such a station still exist? I'd appreciate your help.

Denise
via e-mail

After a little digging around on the internet, it seems Radio Solway used to be an opt-out of BBC Radio Scotland for a couple of hours each day, with local programming. In fact, the service started way back in 1983. Today, it produces local news bulletins for the area which are broadcast at 6.55am, 7.50am, 12.55pm & 4.55pm on 94.7FM and 585 mediumwave, according to the Radio Ark website. A similar service, BBC Radio Tweed, started in 1983 serving Selkirk. It sounds as if the services are still around, can anyone confirm? The addresses for these stations are as follows:

Glad to have bought a digital radio

In response to the reader who queried whether they would be able to receive the North West DAB stations in Buxton (see e-mail of 24th October, below. Ed.), I thought I would write and explain what I can receive with my DAB receiver.

I receive all of the national BBC and commercial services in excellent quality, it's so good to finally be able to hear Virgin Radio in stereo, it sounds so much better now I can actually hear it clearly. TalkSport is also much clearer, although it only broadcasts in mono. Of the digital-only services, Planet Rock and Life have become firm favourites.

Locally, Leicester doesn't have a multiplex yet, although one has been advertised, so we should get some new services sometime next year. However, I am able to pick up the Coventry and Birmingham multiplexes. Again, it's good to be able to hear Classic Gold and Capital Gold clearly, and the range of digital-only services is also very good. On the Birmingham multiplex, there is XFM, Magic and Kiss, I do like to wind down whilst listening to Magic quite often. Over in Coventry, they have the excellent rock service The Storm, and the new dance service also sounds good (if it ever launches).

All in all, I am very pleased with these new services and would certainly recommend to anyone that they get a DAB radio, but I appreciate how expensive they are at present.

Simon Parry, Leicester
via e-mail

If DeeBee is hoping to tune in to the North-West DAB regional multiplex, I would imagine she might have a problem. However, the South Yorkshire multiplex is on the air and most of the digital-only stations on this multiplex (mux) are the same as those available on the Central Lancashire mux (Kiss, Xfm and Real Radio). I would guess there is a high probability of receiving those stations on the South Yorkshire mux from Buxton. She might even get the Birmingham multiplex, since it does sound as if the local services are carried far. I would try the postcode search at the Digital One site.

I would agree with Simon about Virgin Radio and TalkSport - I think when I do eventually buy a digital radio the ability to pick up all those mediumwave stations would make it very worthwhile - TalkSport sounds dreadful on AM here in Bristol during the evening hours! There are also the new BBC services to look forward to, which will be rolled out from next January.

I've heard rumours the first portable DAB receivers based around the Roke Research model will be around GBP 150 pounds - manufacturers will develop their own designs around the (much cheaper) chipset. The manufacturers really need to work on the price, otherwise there will be lots of new services, but few listeners. Ed.

A photo of the Roke handheld DAB receiver
The Roke handheld DAB digital radio receiver

16th October 2001

Just a quick word of thanks for picking up my previous e-mail on this subject and the info about Roke and the Wavefinder. I am using the Videologic 601E via the hi-fi and it sounds great - highly recommended at GBP 249 pounds from Dixons if you haven't got enough brass to spend on the Sony DAB radio!

Roberts Radio are supposed to be bringing out a portable DAB receiver at around GBP 800 but this is still under development. The BBC website also claim that Roberts intend to bring out a model at around GBP 200 early next year, but having tried to speak to someone at Roberts, they appear not to know about this!

Finally, with regard to the Wavefinder, I have heard great reviews about this but I don't want to be confined to listening to digital radio via the PC, hence my original comment on portability.

Yes, an inexpensive portable radio would ensure digital radio gets more listeners than it currently does. The Wavefinder is, however, the cheapest way of tuning in at the moment. It'll be good to see some new kit soon. Ed.

DAB is too expensive!

Hi Steve. Just to confirm that the Yorkshire digital multiplex (see e-mail of 8th October, below. Ed) is a regional one and, according to the Radio Authority website, is expected to be advertised in February 2002. The North Yorkshire multiplex does not feature in any immediate planning. This leads me to say that if the digital radio revolution is to succeed, then surely the cost of receivers has got to come down, and also, that more portable sets should be introduced.

Robert

The price of digital radio should come down significantly with the introduction of a much cheaper chipset. A company called Roke is developing a DAB digital radio that is the size of a portable MP3 player. It really does fit in the palm of your hand. No word on the cost of this tiny machine yet, but it does show how quickly the technology is being miniaturised. It's also worth pointing out the Wavefinder digital radio is now available for GBP 99 pounds + GBP 3.25 p&p from Dixons Online (UPDATE: well, it was up until 18th October. Ed). I haven't seen the Wavefinder in Dixons on the high street for a while, but you can buy it online by doing a search for "digital radio" from the Dixons site.
