Using Apple iPods to listen to radio shows and other audio content
Unlike real-time streaming, podcasting is a way of distributing radio shows and other audio files to listeners via the internet, which can either be played directly from a PC or MAC, or can be transferred to an iPod music player (or indeed any kind of Apple/mp3/mp4 player) in order to listen at a later time. Basically, podcasts are downloaded to the PC or MAC and then synchronised to a music player such as the iPod Nano or iPod Classic 80GB/160GB music/video players.
A piece of software, sometimes called an aggregator - and in this case iTunes - enables you to select podcasts from a range of different genres such as technology shows, discussion shows, unsigned bands, etc. for playback on an iPod nano or larger iPod player.
Podcasts need not be just radio shows: they can be composed of any type of audio or video content.
The attraction of Podcasts is that listeners can choose what they want to listen to and when they want to listen to it on their iPod Nano 4GB/8GB player or iPod Classic 80/160GB player. Typically, radio stations are making popular presenters' shows available to download. However, Podcasting has spawned a whole new generation of wannabe radio presenters, movie critics and entertainers who are all vying for our attention. Listeners can subscribe to some extremely interesting and useful shows - these are often produced to an extremely high standard.

The BBC has a list of downloadable programmes and shows in its Podcast directory. The Guardian website hosts some popular news and media podcasts, while both OneWord and Channel 4 Radio have a selection of podcasts. Virgin Radio's breakfast show podcast is also popular.
