Feedback for Goodmans GPS280 portable DAB stereo

Goodmans GPS280 impressions
Monday 24 Feb 03

I have only had the Goodmans GPS280 stereo for a week, and as there are many functions to learn (from a blind person's point of view). I have held back from doing a review as I would like to do full justice to this excellent piece of kit.

However, my initial thoughts are that this is certainly one of the best products at the cheaper end of the DAB market at present. I have not had the privilege of trying a Pure Evoke-1 yet so cannot compare with that product, but at least you can put batteries in the GPS280 and move it from room to room, thus making it truly portable; connect it to a hi-fi to further enhance its sound quality and, best of all, you have the CD player and an AM/FM analogue tuner as well.

I do believe this is the best way to introduce DAB radio to Joe Public by incorporating it with mainstream products such as CD/cassette players etc. Some people may be disappointed that it doesn't handle MP3s, but to me that is of no real concern. After all, does the majority of the public know what MP3 is?

Full marks to Goodmans for coming up with such an excellent product for its price.

Goodmans GPS280 CD/DAB receiver vs Pure Evoke-1
Tuesday 13th May 03

I would agree that the GPS280 performs well, although the Evoke-1 appears to have better sensitivity. I have had to install an external aerial for the GPS280 in order to eliminate signal chopping on certain stations. The Evoke-1 however, will receive the same stations with perfect clarity using only its telescopic antenna.

The LCD display on the GPS280 is identical to the Evoke-1 except for the backlight. The blue backlight on the GPS280 looks attractive but in practice, I found it rather harsh on the eyes making the display difficult to read under certain ambient lighting conditions. In contrast, the green backlight of the Evoke-1 is restful on the eyes and easily read under all conditions.

The stand alone audio quality of the GPS280 is reasonable, although in my opinion the Evoke-1 has a much richer sound despite its small size. That said, there is nothing to choose between both units when fed through a hi-fi or external amplifier.

I am pleased with my GPS280, the CD player and AM/FM radio together with its ability to run on internal batteries make it a versatile unit.

The Evoke-1 is an excellent DAB radio but it is not portable in the true sense of the word, as it has to be used with a mains adaptor.

For anyone who is uncertain about entering the world of DAB, the extra GBP30.00 for the GPS280 will ensure you have a unit, which will be useful, even if you find DAB disappointing.
